The Fair Housing Act protects everyone from being discriminated against when they are renting or buying housing. All individuals are to be given an equal opportunity to housing regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and the presence of children.
The reason there is a month dedicated to fair housing is there are new first time home buyer/renters that need to know their rights when going into housing negotiations.
Our City of Wallingford has recognized this month in a press release from the Office of the Mayor and wants to make sure anyone who feels they are being discriminated against is heard.
“The municipality’s Fair Housing Officer is Joan Stave. She may be reached at 203-294-2070 for further information regarding discrimination in housing or in any program funded or administered by the Town of Wallingford. Complaints may also be filed with the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunity, 860-541-3403”
If you feel like you aren’t being given a fair opportunity at housing make sure to contact you towns Fair Housing Officer or go to www.hud.gov/fairhousing.
